It has been 30 anniversary since the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing viewers to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Gang
The preview reveals the young girl — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters appear to consider it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the prior film. The final act Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), entrusting her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
